Message from Director Small Industries Service Institute, Chennai

Office of DC, SSI, New Delhi had conducted the 3rd All India Census of SSIs registered with SDIs till 31st March, 2001 including unregistered units.

In Tamilnadu, 1,79,385 units ( 58.39%) were found to be working and 1,27,832 units ( 41.6%) were closed. Of the 1,79,385 working units, 85,843 were SSIs and 93,542 were SSSBEs. Thus, the proportion of SSSBEs had exceeded SSIs by 4.18% reflecting the growth in service activities.

In terms of working units, Tamilnadu ranks sixth among the States. Employment in the registered SSI sector was estimated at 8,78,498 persons, including an average of 5 persons per unit.

The Census also highlights that 46.55% of the units were engaged in manufacturing/assembling/ processing 52.01% in servicing and 1.18% in repair and maintenance activities.

In the present era of globalization it is found that SSIs are taking advantage of the opportunities and providing quality products/ services at reasonable cost. Many fields like IT, Bio technology, Food Processing, Readymade Garments, Herbal products, marine product, bio fuel, Pharmaceuticals, Automobile parts and components, Leather and foot wear, Building materials, service sector etc. are showing high potential for the prospective entrepreneurs.

In order to achieve sustained industrial growth in Tamilnadu, SISI, Chennai has initiated cluster development programmes on wet grinder in Coimbatore, Auto Components cluster in Chennai and lock industry in Dindigul. SISI Chennai through its team of officers is providing techno-managerial consultancy services in the state of Tamilnadu and UT of Pondicherry effectively for the development of SSIs. Various training programmes are regularly organized for different target groups as per the need/scope.

I appeal to all the prospective and existing entrepreneurs to make the best use of SISI services for their development.
